Italian boxer Angela Karini crashed out of the Paris Olympics in just 46 seconds against her opponent, Algerian boxer Imen Khalif.
“I have to save my life,” said Angela, who skipped the bout.
Khalif is one of the two athletes to compete in women’s boxing in Paris. However, Khalif was disqualified for not meeting the eligibility criteria at the Women’s World Championships last year.
According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which currently hosts the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Khelif was disqualified from competitions held in India due to high testosterone levels in the country.
In the first 30 seconds, Angela Karini faced a strong punch on her face.
He then went to the coach in the corner to adjust his head gear.
Though the competition started after that, he came back to the coach once again and stopped the fight.
As soon as the referee raised her hand as if Khalif had won, Karini was seen on camera saying, “It’s not right.”
Karini was in tears in the ring. She came to the media after the bout.
“I couldn’t finish the match. I had a pain like a hard blow to my nose. I told myself after enduring this. As a mature boxer, I wanted to stop the competition. I hope my country and my father don’t misunderstand this decision. I stopped the bout. I stopped for myself,” Angela Carini told BBC Sport.
“It could be a match of a lifetime. But I have to save my life at this moment,” he said.
“I am not afraid. I’m not afraid in the ring. I am not afraid to suffer blows. But, there is an end to everything. I couldn’t continue this match. That’s why I wanted to end it.”
“In my opinion, it’s not a competition at all,” Italian Prime Minister Georgia Mellon said.
“I want her to continue till the end and be happy,” Karini told reporters about Khalif. Karini said she had not come here to judge anyone and that she was not giving judgments.
Khalif has lost only 9 times in his career. She has faced off in 50 fights so far.
“I have come here to win a gold medal. I will fight with everyone,” Khalif said.
