Interim government is moving towards Pakistan and China’. Is it embarrassing for India?

It has been a month since Sheikh Hasina lost power in Bangladesh.

After her loss of power, the interim government in Bangladesh and some of its major parties are signalling that it is strengthening relations with Pakistan and China.

Bangladesh, which was close to India until a month ago, now wants to improve relations with China and Pakistan.

Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Syed Ahmed met Bangladesh’s acting government minister Nahid Islam on September 1.

The Hindustan Times quoted an official as saying that Ahmed had spoken to Nahid Islam on the issue of resolving the 1971 issue with Pakistan.

The 1971 war between Pakistan and Bangladesh has been a major issue for years.

Prior to the meeting, on August 30, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif spoke to the head of the interim government, Mohammad Yunus.

China’s initiative

Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan after the 1971 war. India played a key role in the formation of Bangladesh. China opposed the creation of Bangladesh.

But now it looks like the Bangladesh interim government is moving towards China.

The interim government lifted the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami in Bangladesh a few days ago. Jamaat-e-Islami was banned by sheikh Hasina’s government in 2013.

‘Jamaat-e-Islami’ is the largest Islamic party in Bangladesh. The student organisation affiliated to this party is very strong.

The students of the institute played a key role in the movement in Bangladesh against Sheikh Hasina.

Jamaat-e-Islami has been accused of promoting violence and terrorism in Bangladesh.

After the demolition of the Babri Masjid in India, the ‘Jamaat-e-Islami’ has been accused of instigating anti-Hindu riots in Bangladesh, an organisation working against India.

Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiq-ur-Rehman said India had done things that Bangladesh did not like in the past.

He blamed India for the recent floods in Bangladesh.

“Bangladesh must get rid of the burden of the past (india’s influence) and maintain strong ties with the US, China and Pakistan,” Rahman said.

Hasina’s exit gives China a chance?

Jamaat-e-Islami leaders met the Chinese ambassador after bangladesh’s interim government lifted the ban.

“China wants good relations with Bangladesh. China stands by Bangladesh and its people,” Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen said.

When Sheikh Hasina was in power, she gave more importance to relations with India than china.

In July 2024, Sheikh Hasina returned to Bangladesh after concluding her visit to China midway.

After arriving in Bangladesh, she said india and China are interested in the construction of teesta project. He, however, said he wants India to complete the project.

Naturally, China may not have liked the announcement.

According to analysts, Sheikh Hasina’s resignation as prime minister and fleeing the country is an opportunity for China and Pakistan.

What do the experts say?

“China has opposed the creation of Bangladesh. Bangladesh has finally been recognised by China,” former Indian foreign secretary Kanwal Sibal said in a message posted on social media.

“Jamaat also opposed the creation of Bangladesh. China’s promise of supporting Bangladeshis is fake. China does not want a change of power in its country even after witnessing the student movement in Bangladesh. Recall 1989 (Tiananmen Square). Jamaat also supports the Chinese by sidelining The Uighur Muslims,” he wrote in the post.

International affairs expert Brahma Chellani also commented on the changing attitude of Bangladesh on social media.

“The provisional government in Bangladesh is giving freedom to violent Islamists. The provisional government was not constitutionally constituted. That government does not have a majority,” he wrote on social media.

Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen has not been able to return to Bangladesh for years as her books have become controversial.

She has been living in India since 2011.

“The situation will get worse with the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus. The ground situation there is against India, women and democracy,” Taslima Nasreen was quoted as saying by ‘Mint’.
