What are the options before India in the case of Sheikh Hasina?

It has been almost a month since former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in India. She has been staying here since then.

India has made elaborate security arrangements for Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana.

However, india is yet to officially announce its final decision on Sheikh Hasina’s case so far.

The Bangladesh government recently revoked Sheikh Hasina’s diplomatic and official passport.

The question now arises as to what is the legal basis for her staying in India.

Some top Indian government officials and experts in Delhi told the BBC that there are three options ahead of India in these circumstances.

What are those three options?

The first option. To make arrangements for Sheikh Hasina to seek asylum as a political refugee in a country other than India. It must have been an arrangement where her safety would not be disturbed.

The second option. The decision to grant asylum to Sheikh Hasina in India as a political refugee. To make arrangements for her to stay in India as per the immediate requirements.

The third option. Wait for things to improve and then send Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh. Observers believe that India may try to send her back into politics there.

There are reasons for this third option. Hasina’s Awami League party still exists there. Hasina may take charge of the party again after she goes to her country.

However, some diplomatic experts suggest that the first option is better for India.

If Sheikh Hasina stays in India, it could have a negative impact on relations between Delhi and Dhaka.

If there is a request from Dhaka to extradite Sheikh Hasina under the India-Bangladesh Extradition Treaty, India can reject it.

Political observers say her extradition to Bangladesh under a judicial inquiry may not be a good option for India.
