Suryanarayana works as a security guard at a commercial complex in Visakhapatnam’s Dwarka Nagar. He and his wife Kumari keep track of the Paris Olympics on a daily basis.
They are looking forward to the events at the Olympics on August 7. They are confident that their daughter will win a medal in it.
These are the parents of Jyoti Yarrazi, who will be competing in the 100m hurdles at the Olympics.
Jyothi Yerrazi, a 25-year-old from Visakhapatnam, is also the first Indian athlete to compete in the 100m hurdles event at the Olympics.
Jyothi Yerraji’s family lives on the hillslope in Kailasapuram. The fear of landslides is often seen in the area.
To reach Jyoti’s house, she has to walk up a hill with a staircase for three minutes. Jyothi’s brother Suresh works as a contract driver at Visakhapatnam port.
‘I don’t even know which country my child has gone to’
Jyothi Yerraji’s father Suryanarayana has been working as a security guard for the last 10 years. Earlier, he used to work as a construction labourer. He sustained serious injuries to his legs after he fell from the roof while working at a building. He became a security guard to support the family.
Jyoti’s mother also used to cook and clean utensils in a hotel till two years ago. She stopped going to work as her husband’s health did not help her.
The BBC went to the commercial complex where Suryanarayana, who works as a night security guard, was on duty. If you ask him to tell me about his daughter Jyoti…
“I don’t know which country my child has gone to. I don’t know what’s going to play out. Because I don’t have much education. They know a little bit. Now Jyothi has gone to the place where all the games in the world are played. It will definitely win the gold medal. There are many medals that Jyothi has won in our house,” says Suryanarayana.
