Sheikh Hasina resigns as Bangladesh PM, leaves for India

Sheikh Hasina resigns as Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He then left the country for India. This was confirmed by BBC Bangla.

Along with Hasina, her sister also left the country.

The latest developments assume significance in the wake of clashes between police and anti-government protesters in Bangladesh over the past few years.

The protests, which began last month with the demand for abolition of quota in civil services jobs, gradually widened into an anti-government movement.

The protesters demanded hasina’s resignation as prime minister.

The ‘Purn Asahayog Andolan’, called by student organisations and activists, has spread to various parts of the country, including Dhaka.

Protesters break into PM’s residence

Bbc Bangla reported that a group of protesters had entered the prime minister’s residence in Dhaka.

Visuals emerged of protesters infiltrating and looting.

In the videos, some of the demonstrators can be seen carrying chairs and sofas.

“We are witnessing a mass uprising in Bangladesh, with thousands of people taking to the streets. There was news that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had suddenly left her official residence,” said Akbar Hossain, a spokesman for BBC Bangla from the Bangladeshi capital.

Interim government in the country: Army chief

Army Chief Walker-uz-Zaman has said that an interim government will be formed in Bangladesh. He made a televised address to the people of the country.

He said he was going to meet Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin and hoped that a solution would be found by the end of the day.

The Army chief said he has already spoken to opposition political parties in the country.

However, there is no clarity on who will lead the government. Walker-uz-Zaman promised justice to all the people of Bangladesh.

Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangladesh’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is the longest-serving woman in the world to head the government.
